Tips & Tricks

Tuning crankbaits can sometimes be an intimidating task for some anglers, but all it takes is a little time and patience.
To tune your crankbaits, start out by casting the lure straight out and point your rod at the lure, holding the rod tip low to the water. Then begin retrieving the bait. The lure should run straight in line with the rod and should not veer off to one side. If the lure is not tracking straight, bend the line tie the direction you want the bait to go (see picture below).
*BEND A LITTLE AT A TIME*

Cranking laydown tress has long been regarded as a secret trick of the Pros, but is a fairly easy technique to master. The first step is having the right type of crankbait that will work well coming thru and over limbs and trunks. I have designed my CP1C and CP2C specifically for this purpose. The next trick is the retrieve. Many anglers will throw out and start reeling as they would when throwing in open water, they will then hit a limb, set the hook and hang up the lure. You must crawl the bait thru the cover and when you hit something, slow down your retrieve. If a fish has hit your bait, you will feel the difference and can then set the hook. Also, make sure you "line up" with the tree prior to making your cast so that you can bring your bait along the tree or log.  Minimum line strength for this technique would be 15 lb. test with many anglers opting to use 20 or 25 lb. test.
